Smoky, tart, and sweet, this chipotle citrus sauce blends together in one step. The chipotles bring heat and smoke, the citrus keeps it bright, and the agave rounds it out.
Ingredients
- 170 ml (¾ cup) lime juice
- 170 ml (¾ cup) orange juice
- 120 ml (½ cup) agave syrup
- 4 whole chipotles from a can
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- 1
Blend all ingredients until very smooth.
- 2
Taste and adjust seasoning, salt, lime, or agave as needed.
- 3
Cook's Note
Blend until fully smooth, any unblended chipotle pieces will create hot spots in whatever you're putting this on. Taste after blending and add lime if it needs more brightness.
Best Served With
Drizzled on tacos, grilled meat, or roasted vegetables. Works as a dipping sauce.
Why This Recipe Works
Chipotle in adobo is already smoked and deeply flavored on its own. The citrus cuts through the heaviness and keeps the sauce from being one-note. Agave adds sweetness without the graininess of unblended sugar.
Make It Yours
- Add a garlic clove for more depth.
- Include a canned jalapeño for extra heat.
- Use grapefruit instead of orange for a more bitter edge.
Leftover Strategy
Keeps refrigerated in a sealed container for up to 2 weeks.
