Smoked Salt Mix recipe

Smoky, garlicky, and well-rounded, this is the house finishing salt. A pinch of it on anything that needs a final seasoning lift.

Ingredients

  • 190 g (6¾ oz) kosher salt
  • 1½ tbsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp finely ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp hickory smoke powder

Instructions

  1. 1
Combine all ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. 2
    Mix thoroughly until evenly blended.

Cook's Note

Mix this in a well-ventilated spot, the hickory powder and pepper together kick up a cloud when you stir. A face shield or at minimum keeping your head back from the bowl will save your eyes.

How to Use This

Use as a finishing salt, pinch over grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or anything that needs a last-minute seasoning hit.

Why This Foundation Works

Onion powder and garlic powder at this ratio give the mix a savory, rounded base that plain smoked salt lacks. The hickory powder carries smokiness without any moisture, which means the mix stays dry and flows freely instead of clumping.

Make It Yours

  • Add smoked paprika for an extra layer of smokiness and a slight red color
  • Add celery salt for a more complex, savory profile
  • Add a small amount of cayenne for heat

Leftover Strategy

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 6 months.
